Repairing Storm-Related Roof Damage

Following a storm, you will need to check to see if your home has been damaged in any way. In particular, you will need to check your roof. A natural disaster does not have to be a particularly nasty storm to cause damage to your home.

One of the areas of the home that is particularly susceptible to damage from bad storms is the roof. Roofing material can be ripped up and dislodged by strong storms. When this happens, the rain can then penetrate the ceiling and cause water damage. If this is not taken care of as soon as possible, the repairs will be much more extensive, and they will cost you a lot more.

You will need to climb up on the roof and carefully check it from one side to the other. From the ground, you cannot get a good vantage point, and you will not be able to see the full extent of the damage unless it is very extensive.

One missed spot can result in extensive damage if it is not caught and fixed. If another severe storm hits, you may not only have to replace certain parts of your roof but portions of the wall, furniture, and other household items.

Directly following the storm, you will probably not be able to complete all of the repairs that are needed right away. Unless you are a professional carpenter, engineer, or roofer, you probably do not have the materials you need to complete the repair job.

As a result, you will have to do something to repair it temporarily. This is important because it can still prevent a lot of the damage that may otherwise occur before a professional roofer can help or before you can get the materials that you need to do it yourself.

Tips for Tackling Storm-Related Roof Damage

To begin, you will want to make sure that you have a tarp or waterproof canvas in storage so that you can cover areas that have received damage and which will leak before you can repair it. The tarp should be spread over the top of the roof so that damage will not be sustained in the wood under the shingles.

If you only put buckets under the leaks, you will be gathering the water after it has performed damage that will add to your repair expenses. You will want carefully to apply the waterproof canvas or the tarp so that you do not cause more damage than is already present.

Make sure that you have someone outside with you while you are on the roof. It is also a good idea to get others to help you apply the tarps appropriately so that the task will go faster. You will want to place heavy weights on the edges of the tarp so that the wind does not remove it.

It is a good idea to make sure that even heavy storm winds will not remove these things as the roof will be the most susceptible to damage during the storms and rain. An alternative to a tarp or waterproof canvas is using a roof sealant in the areas that are exposed to the weather.

Of course, you should make sure that you use the appropriate safety equipment when you are up on the roof. You should make sure that you have a hard hat so that if you hit your head, you will not suffer from a concussion or worse.

It is also important to have and use safety ladders and rope supports in appropriate areas to prevent a fall. The more precautions you can take to prevent an accident, the better.

After you have completed as many temporary repairs as possible, you will want to pursue the completion of permanent repairs actively. Call a professional roofing contractor, like Ardent Roof Systems, to find out how soon you can make an appointment.

If many others have experienced the same kind of damage, then it may be weeks or even months until you will be able to fix the problems permanently. By properly taking care of your home following a storm, it will last much longer in nice condition.
